The reason Fulham decided to take late transfer gamble on Liverpool £20m outcast

After nearly four years without a Liverpool appearance to his name, Lazar Markovic has finally moved on.

The Serbian winger hadn’t played a game for the Reds since 2015 and had long since been surplus to requirements at Anfield, having had four different loan spells during Jurgen Klopp’s time as manager.

Markovic was into the final few months of a five-year deal signed in July 2014 and he finally departs Anfield for the cottagers on a short term deal until the end of the season.

It’s undoubtedly a gamble for the relegation-threatened Cottagers as they seek to desperately retain their status as a Premier League club.

However, it appears as though Fulham boss Claudio Ranieri was prepared to back the judgement of star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

In a statement released on the club’s official website in the early hours of Friday morning, Fulham detailed how top-scorer Mitrovic had recommended his Serbian compatriot.

“The club is delighted to confirm the free transfer signing of 24-year-old winger Lazar Markovic from Liverpool on a deal until the end of the season,” read the statement which was released shortly after midnight.

“Fulham received very good recommendations from Aleksandar Mitrovic regarding the player.”

The move mercifully brings an end to a deeply disappointing period of Markovic’s career.
