Lionel Messi was on the scoresheet yet again for Barcelona last night as they overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit against Sevilla to progress to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey. He scored the final goal in what turned out to be a rout as Barca cruised to a 6-1 win on the night, as the fans inside the Nou Camp were treated to a vintage Barca performance.

Philippe Coutinho had one of his better games for Barcelona, bagging a brace to send the hosts on their way. The opening goal was a penalty that Messi allowed him to take, thinking an early goal would help the Brazilian, who has been low on confidence in recent weeks.

The Argentine clearly knew best as after an Ivan Rakitic goal, Coutinho added his second to put the hosts 3-0 up on the night. Sevilla pulled one back thanks to Guilherme Arana before Luis Suarez put the game out of reach in the 89th minute.

Messi wasn’t finished though as he had yet to get his name on the scoresheet. Sevilla were pushing forward before the Argentine picked up the ball on the right wing. He switched the play with a sumptuous ball towards Arturo Vidal who played it to Luis Suarez first time.

Suarez and Gerard Pique then exchanged a lightning-quick one-two in the box before Suarez squared the ball for Jordi Alba. The left-back then backheeled the ball to Messi, who killed the defender and the goalkeeper with his first touch before passing the ball into the net. Sumptuous.

Messi said after the game:

“It was said that we had given up in the cup, that we didn’t want it. But in no way is this the case. This team wants to fight for all three titles, as is the obligation of Barca every year.”
