Arsene Wenger may be gone, but he is still the reason Arsenal can’t buy players, details here…

No wonder he had a smile on his face...

Arsenal have been struggling to find any cash during this transfer window, with Unai Emery restricted to bringing in players on loan. The Spaniard appears to be operating with his hands tied behind his back during this window as he looks to bring in players such as Ivan Perisic and Denis Suarez in the next few days.

Now it has emerged that Arsene Wenger’s giant pay-off may be one of the reasons why Arsenal are struggling financially during this window. The Times have reported that the French manager was paid in full for the final year of his contract, whilst his staff have also been paid off.

In total, Wenger was paid £17.2m to leave the club which proved to put a dent in the club’s finances for this season.

Given the club also had to pay to bring in Unai Emery and his staff, as well as spending around £80m in the summer on new players such as Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno and Sokratis, it is easy to see why they have had to tighten the purse strings this month.

On top of this, Arsenal are not getting the much out of their biggest investment, Mesut Ozil, who earns £350k a week.

He is out of favour with new boss Unai Emery and has been linked with a move away, although that seems unlikely in this window.

A player earning that much money must be contributing heavily to the team’s success and Ozil, unfortunately, this season has not been doing that. Emery will have to make a few moves and work hard if he is able to bring any players in.
