No Narok Schoolgirl has undergone ‘cut’ test

Days after  George Natembeya, commissioner for Narok County, issued orders for schoolgirls to undergo compulsory tests for female genital mutilation in a move to crackdown against the illegal and harmful practice.

Anti-FGM Board has said that  no girl from Narok county has been subjected to a female genital mutilation test, Board chairperson Agnes Pareiyo said all girls in the area have gone back to school.

“The board confirms that all girls are in school and that no girl has been paraded for FGM screening contrary to the allegations that have been circulating on social media,” she said on Tuesday.

County commissioner George Natembeya last week issued a directive that schoolgirls in upper primary and secondary school would undergo pregnancy and FGM tests when reporting to school.

He accused some parents of enabling FGM perpetrators by not reporting culprits.

Natembeya was criticised for the announcement with people saying the tests are an invasion of privacy and would humiliate the girls.

Pareiyo said, “Our duty as a board is to protect the girl child. What was reported in the media is not true or else we would be at the forefront of fighting for the rights of the affected girls.”
