Chelsea boss admits Sarri deserves a trophy but keen to deny him Carabao Cup

Ahead of their Carabao Cup clash on Tuesday 8th January, Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has admitted that it’s time his opposite number Mauricio Pochettino wins a trophy with Tottenham Hotspur.

Pochettino joined Spurs from Southampton in 2014 and has transformed the North London club into UEFA Champions League regulars. The Argentine came close to clinching the English Premier League back in 2016 but this side fell off the pace in the final games of the season and saw Leicester City win the fairytale title. Pochettino has been linked with the Real Madrid and Manchester United jobs but has been widely criticized for lack of trophies in his managerial career.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the game, Sarri was asked if Pochettino needs to land a trophy, “I agree because he is a very good coach, one of the best at the moment, I agree he has to win a trophy, I hope not this.”

Sarri who is also yet to win any major honors with his sides was asked the same question, “I think it is the same [if Sarri needs to win a trophy]. Of course Pochettino is in Tottenham from four years ago and I am here from six months and I think that here in the first season it is really very difficult for everybody.

“For Pochettino, four years, for Klopp, four years, it was really very hard in the first season also for [Pep] Guardiola so here it is really very difficult to build up a very good team. You need time”
