A senior police officer attached at the DCI office in Nairobi over the weekend lost his gun in unclear circumstances.

The officer told his colleagues that he was with his friends at a club in Utawala and only realised his pistol with 15 bullets was missing on his way home.

The incident comes at a time when the Firearms Licensing Board is tightening rules of private gun ownership.

Kenya has about 12,000 private gun owners but the board believes almost 3,000 of the licences are fake.

On December 17, 2018, the government suffered a setback after the court suspended the implementation of a gazette notice ordering for fresh vetting of licensed gun owners.

The process was halted pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the by the National Gun Owners Association (NGAO).

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i had ordered all civilian gun owners to undergo mandatory fresh vetting in the next three months.
