Manchester United legend advises Ole Gunnar on transfers

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has told interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he does not need to sign a defender this month.

37-year-old old had said last month that the club needs to sign a ‘ball-playing centre-back, naming Leicester’s Harry Maguire as the ideal target for the Red Devils. But Berbatov now says the recent performances of Victor Lindelof and Phil Jones have shown that Manchester United do not need to sign a defender in January.

“I have said in this column before that United need a new ball-playing centre-back, but the likes of Lindelof and Jones are now showing that they are more than capable of bringing the ball out so they don’t need anyone else,” he said.

“Ole instead needs to focus on bringing the best out of the players already on the books and there have been some good signs there already, with Marcus Rashford looking very sharp and even Alexis Sanchez joining the party at Newcastle with an excellent assist. The FA Cup match against Reading will be a good chance for the likes of Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku to show the new manager that they deserve starting positions against Spurs,” he added.

Jose Mourinho was unhappy with his defensive options before being sacked and was ready to spend big on a defender in January after missing out of a number of targets in the summer.
