Opinion: Best midfielder in EPL Named

Graeme Souness thinks Manchester City’s Fernandinho is “easily” the best midfielder in the Premier League at the moment.

The Brazilian put in another wonderful performance for the Citizens as they beat Liverpool 2-1 to get their title defence back on track.

Victory over Jurgen Klopp’s men means the gap on Liverpool is now down to four points with the second half of the season ahead of them.

And Souness was very impressed by Fernandinho and in particular his high work rate.

“I though the two centre-halves, Stones and Vincent Kompany, were outstanding,” Souness said on Sky Sports. “Bernardo Silva in midfield was fabulous.

“And of course, the central midfield player that we were talking about before the game. Fernandinho is easily the best central midfield player in our country right now.

“The amount of work he gets through is overlooked by the technique he has as well. When he wins it, puts a tackle in, he gets his head up and generally makes the best pass that’s on offer.”

Meanwhile, Leroy Sane – who scored City’s winner – also had lots of praise for Fernandinho’s performance.

“Everyone knows Fernandinho is important for us,” Sane told the club’s website.

“He has to defend the ball, win the ball, pass the ball!
