Klopp decries denied red card in Man City loss

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany should have been sent off for a challenge on Mohamed Salah, says Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

On Thursday night, Liverpool suffered the first defeat of the season at the Etihad after losing 1-2 to City. Kompany lunged in on Salah following a slack pass but Anthony Taylor showed the Belgian only a yellow card. The Egyptian recovered from the challenge and remained in pitch, a tackle Klopp claimed it could have ended his season.

“I really like Vincent Kompany, I really like him but how on Earth is that not a red card? He is the last man and he goes in. If he hits Mo [Salah] more he is out for the season,” said Klopp.

“Only because Mo is in the air. It’s only because he knows Mo is that quick that if he gets the ball he’s through so he takes the risk. That’s the situation, of course, but it is not easy for the ref and he may not see it how I see it.

Kompany’s challenge certainly looked a desperate one as he attempted to stop Salah racing through on goal, although he said afterward that he thought it was a ‘great challenge’. In total, six players were cautioned during the game by Taylor, while it was Kompany’s fourth booking in only nine Premier League games this season.
