Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was caught yelling at Dejan Lovren in the last minutes of the Reds’ loss to Manchester City on Thursday night. Pep Guardiola’s side closed the gap on leaders Liverpool to four points after a 2-1 win at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero opened the scoring before half-time but Liverpool thought they’d earned a point when Roberto Firmino equalised after the interval.
However, Leroy Sane struck a late goal to give City all three points but they had to survive an onslaught in the final minutes to secure the victory. Liverpool pushed Van Dijk into attack in the hope his physical presence would produce a late equaliser but service was lacking.
The Dutchman was clearly frustrated at Liverpool’s first defeat of the season and he unleashed a tirade on team-mate Lovren after the Croatian hit an aimless long pass in the final seconds. Van Dijk wanted Lovren to play a wider angled pass so that he could play off the second ball but the defender knocked a long, straight ball into the middle and it went out of play.
