Benjamin Mendy was mistaken for a pitch invader after Man City beat Liverpool

Manchester City defender Benjamin Mendy this afternoon took to Twitter to highlight a piece of footage from the aftermath of the Citizens’ victory over Liverpool last night.

City welcomed Jurgen Klopp’s high-flying Reds to the Etihad for a crucial meeting in the race for the Premier League title.

The scintillating form of the Merseysiders, coupled with a surprise blip on the part of the champions over the Christmas period, meant that a Liverpool win last night would have seen a massive 10-point gap opened up between the sides in the English top-flight table.

However, in the end, Pep Guardiola’s men performed when it mattered most, securing all 3 points with a 2-1 win.

Sergio Aguero and Leroy sane bagged the hosts’ goals, either side of a Roberto Firmino equalizer just past the hour-mark.

And, amid the celebrations, one eagle-eyed fan managed to catch footage of Benjamin Mendy bursting onto the pitch to congratulate his teammates.

Mendy, who is currently sidelined with a knee injury, was unable to contain his excitement following the game’s tense finish.

However, in making his way towards the trio of Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling, Mendy, who was not dressed in the club’s colours, was spotted by a pair of stewards, and seemingly mistaken for a fan.

The duo subsequently sprinted after Mendy, only to realise their mistake at the last second.
