One Signing Unai Emery May Make In January

Allan Smith has been impressed with the start Emery as made as Arsenal head coach.

However, the former striker admits there are still concerns defensively.

Arsenal have conceded more goals in the Premier League this season than the four teams above them in the table, as well as promoted Wolves.

Centre-back Rob Holding will miss the remainder of the campaign with a knee injury, whereas Konstantinos Mavropanos is yet to play this term due to a groin problem.

Smith doubts Shkodran Mustafi is up to the task so reckons Emery could dip into the market next month.

“Well we know it’s notoriously difficult in January but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Unai Emery had got his eye on somebody and he did bring somebody into the club,” he told Express Sport.

“Who that might be I don’t know.

“But I think central defence will probably be his first port of call.

“Mustafi is a worry quite often, Sokratis [Papastathopoulos] has done quite well coming into it and Rob Holding was doing well before his injury, which is a real shame for him.

“So it does leave them a little short, they’ve still got Mavropanos in the background but he’s maybe a bit young.

“So I would see that as the area of the team that he would want to strengthen definitely.”

Emery managed in La Liga for several years at Almeria, Valencia and Sevilla, so knows the league well.

And Smith says the Spaniard could look for a young defender to help solve his problems.

“It might be that he buys somebody, a younger player from Spain where he knows the market extremely well,” the Arsenal hero added.

“Perhaps somebody that hasn’t made a great name for themselves yet but he sees great potential in.”
