And Rashford, who scored United’s opener with a sweetly struck free kick, explained what Solskjaer had told the players about the game plan ahead of kick off.

“He wants us to be positive on the ball and always look for the gaps and play positive football and that was just the start today,” Rashford told BT Sport. “Today was a good start but we will improve and get better at it.”

Lingard suggested that a positive game plan was what had been the big change for United since the 3-1 defeat against Liverpool the weekend before.

“I think the quick play, the lads played forward very quickly and were positive with ball and we were making runs off the ball the midfield were playing higher and the full backs are higher and we pegged them back and created a lot of chances through that,” Lingard replied when asked by BT Sport about what had changed.

United will hope to replicate a similar attacking performance when they host Huddersfield at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
