Ozil future in doubt after Arsenal boss sentiments

After being dropped from the matchday squad against Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals, Arsenal manager Unai Emery has refused to assure Mesut Ozil of his future at the club.

Arsenal were eliminated from the tournament after a 2-0 defeat at the Emirates Stadium courtesy of goals from Heung-Min Son and Dele Alli as Spurs sailed to the semis and bagged the bragging rights in the process. Ozil is the club’s highest paid player but has been handed limited playing time of late with a reported back injury and sometimes omitted due to ‘tactical’ reasons.

When asked why he dropped Ozil, Emery replied, “A tactical decision. I thought the players today who were with us were were for us the best for this match.” The Spanish coach was also asked how the decision went down with the midfielder, “I am thinking we have 24/25 players. When I am playing one and not another, it is for me my decision and today it was tactical.”

Emery had this to say when asked if the German has a future at Arsenal, “My focus now is the analysis of this match and on also Saturday. Tomorrow we go to training with every player and how they can be for a difficult match against Burnley. I am thinking of the match on Saturday, I am not thinking about another situation.”
