Inside Government Plans to eradicate Nairobi Slums

 

Think of a Nairobi without the slums, better living conditions for all at a very affordable price.

That is  what they government is aiming at in the coming days and the vision is clear.

Housing is one of the challenges in Nairobi and quite expensive as a matter of fact but the government has set plans to ensure that life is made easier on the lines of accommodation.

The Government intends to eradicate slums in Nairobi and other major towns in the next five years, CS every housing project will include 200,000 social houses.

Earlier today, Governor Mike Sonko made a visit to Parkroad area in Pangani where H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta will launch the low-cost housing pilot project.

In Nairobi the project will kick off in Park Road then later in Kiambiu and Starehe. This is part of the 500,000 housing units the President has promised to build in his final term.

The Government, in collaboration with county governments, will build 2,000 housing units in each county.

Sonko confirmed that they  have already signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Government in the low-cost housing project.

Under the MoU, county governments will avail land while the national government will provide finances and capacity building.

The government  has already secured 7,000 acres of land for the initial phase. It is also also working with the National Treasury, the World Bank and other stakeholders to operationalise the Kenya Mortgage Refinancing Company to provide medium and long-term liquidity to mortgage lenders.

In the next five years there is hope that every Kenyan will be living in better conditions that will quite make us all as equals.

Some of the strategies used to eradicate slums in different countries and transform slums , with varying degrees of success, include a combination of slum removal, slum relocation, slum upgrading, urban planning with citywide infrastructure development, and public housing.

Kenya will soon be among the countries that have made efforts in ensuring that its citizens live in a favorable environment.
