Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield confirmed Manchester United’s worst-ever start to a Premier League season, leaving them 19 points behind leaders Liverpool and being 11 points off the top four after just 17 matches.
In his post-match press conference, Mourinho admitted that Manchester United cannot win the Premier League title and doesn’t think he can fix that. However, he believes that The Red Devils can still finish fourth. Although getting fourth position will be not easy, United can secure a top-six finish.
As for the doubt from a Sky Sports reporter asking if he still had the backing of the Manchester United players due to the latest setback, this manager still believes that his players are honest. “You are asking me if they are dishonest. I believe they are honest and you believe they are dishonest. A football player has to give (their) all, every day, maximum every day, every match, every minute. It doesn’t matter the manager or anything else.” he responded.
Also, Mourinho thinks Liverpool is a better team and Manchester United cannot compare Liverpool’s intensity, physicality and technical qualities. The performance of Manchester United in the match is related to United players’ ability. Liverpool side have several physical players and they are also good players technically such as Robertson, Mane and Salah. However, Manchester United side have lots of problems with physicality and several injury-prone players, which is difficult for United when the game has high levels of intensity.
