Manchester United are one of the front-runners to bring in Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele but they face heavy competition from some of Europe’s top clubs according to France Football. Barcelona, Tottenham and Man City are also interested in the 21-year-old who has attracted huge praise for his performances this season.

Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has been firm with his handling of this interest and has previously stated he has turned down offers in excess of £45 million. The player himself is also keen to remain grounded and not commit himself to one club or the other, keeping his options open.

He recently told Canal: “I could have gone, maybe things would have worked out well,”

“The club was firm, they didn’t want me to leave. I didn’t feel like leaving, and I think that today you can see that it was the best decision for me.

“Things are going well, I am playing a lot of games, and I am in the French national team. So, I think for the moment it was the best decision.

“I don’t imagine how my career will go, I live it instead.

“Of course they are big clubs, I don’t close the door to anyone.

“When I was young I didn’t dream of being in this or that club (like PSG), whether it is Real Madrid, Barcelona, City, I have never dreamed of being in a specific club like that.”

That means United will have to fork out a massive fee, around £90m if they are to secure his signature and beat other top European clubs to the midfielder who has impressed against Manchester City in the Champions League this season. However, United will be concerned at this huge fee after they allowed Jose Mourinho to spend £50m on Fred, a player who is struggling to get into the matchday squad at the minute.

If United stick with Mourinho in the long-term then Ndombele could prove to be a top signing, however, the uncertainty surrounding the manager at the minute means significant January investment could prove difficult.
