Noose tightens as NHIF Boss is re-arrested By DCI detectives

The embattled, suspended National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) CEO Geoffrey Mwangi has been re-arrested over corruption charges. Mwangi, who was handed a compulsory leave in November, was arrested by Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives over the infamous scandal involving Ksh 1.1 billion contract involving provision of integrated revenue collection services.  DCI boss George Kinoti confirmed the arrest, adding that upto 17 other NHIF employees were on the authorities’ radar over graft.

Speaking to Citizen TV, Kinoti divulged that 30 senior detectives were dispatched on Saturday, December 8, to track the remaining 17 senior officials involved in the scandal. The former NHIF boss was released on a KSh 500,000 cash bail alongside Chief Finance Director Wilbert Kurgat. Mwangi was charged for allegedly failing to comply with a court order which required him to produce documents which would have helped investigators’ cause in getting to the bottom of the scandal.

Earlier, TUKO.co.ke reported of the massive fraud allegations that have tailed the suspended NHIF CEO including an irregular award of tenders to two groups that had bid for a medical scheme for civil servants, police and prison officers. Several companies had bid but the tender was awarded to two companies, Britam Life Assurance Company (K) Ltd and Pioneer Assurance Company Ltd, who had quoted higher prices than the rest.
