Peter Chuani aka DJ Pinye has today said what most Kenyans think but afraid of. In an interview at NRG radio, Pinye took on Kenyan artists whose music he says is ‘mediocre.
Giving examples of his idea of mediocre songs, the DJ said that he would never play songs like ‘lamba lolo’ or ‘new position.’

“There are artists whose music I did not play back in the days including Khaligraph and DNA but their career has grown. I cannot play Lamba Lolo or New Position. Deejays shouldn’t play mediocre music,” said Pinye.
Kenyan music over the years been accused of being shallow as far as content is concerned. While the beats are catchy and the songs are club bangers, most of the Kenyan music is lyrically shallow and not edifying to the listener.
While Pinye has received backlash on social media over his remarks, there are a few Kenyans who agree with the DJ that the Kenyan music industry has a lot of watered down content. Take a look at some of the opinions of those in agreement with Pinye:

And I agree with DJ Pinye. You must stand for something. If you think the music is bad, don't play it to your fans

"DJ Pinye" spot on bro👌👌👌 there is trash music and then there is treasure music. I stand with you on this one💯💯%. Dj's should desist from being used as a platform to churn out and popularize garbage. Give out quality and your music will resonate well with the masses.

DJ Pinye has only voiced what goes on in our mind, Kenya should have no space for mediocre music. Unless we take heed and change the trajectory we are on currently, no Kenyan artist will be on the same table as West African artists.

Before we bash DJ Pinye, can we just agree that quite a number of Kenyan artists ought to up their game and write music that is entertaining but still uplifting or that has positive influence on society.
What’s your take on this whole issue? Do you share Pinye’s sentiments?
