Women often get offended when society refers to them as slay queens. For most women it’s a belittling term seeing as the word has been misinterpreted by many. However, one Nairobi Women’s Representative Esther Passaris now says there’s nothing wrong with being a slay queen.

In a video that has been doing rounds on social media, Esther Passaris in an interview on Ebru TV demonstrated what it means to be a slay queen, while putting on lipstick.

According to her, there is nothing wrong to be called a slay queen or king. She said that people have misinterpreted the term and likened it to being a prostitute.

“Slaying is all about loving yourself, putting a lipstick, having a kiss, taking a photograph. It’s not about prostitution, our young girls slay and even me I have slayed with my daughter on a photo,” said Passaris.

“When you see Governor Joho puts a picture of himself looking very cool and no negative comment whatsoever. That is what we call slaying as he gets over 4,000 likes because he looks cool, that is slaying,” she added.

The women rep further said that being a slay queen is all about being confident about oneself and knowing who one is in their own space.

“Its not even about beauty because everybody is beautiful, its all about knowing who you are within your space, whether you have a big behind or you have a big front,” she added.

However, Passaris and Cabinet Secretary for Education Amina Mohamed seem to disagree on the issue of slay queens. Only yesterday at the Women’s Run 2018 that saw women from across the country come together to run running against all forms of gender based violence, CS Amina Mohamed said that women are not slay queens.

“We will not accept to be called any names… We are not slay queens. We are Kenyan citizens,” said Amina

In Kenya, more often, the terms slay queen and slay king have been interpreted to mean a woman or man who lives a high end lifestyle and asks for expensive treatment which they would not otherwise afford on their own,
