“The score was 1-1, as tense as you like. Then up popped the head of Virgil van Dijk!”

The Netherlands’ skipper’s new ditty may have replaced his original chant but the lyrics commemorating his Liverpool debut winner against Everton remain rather fitting nearly 12 months on from his move to Anfield.

When Bill Shankly signed Ron Yeats in 1961, he famously told waiting journalists; “Take a walk around my centre half, gentlemen, He’s a colossus!”

The same is true of Van Dijk. Standing at 6ft 4 inches, you can’t miss the centre-back. What you see is what you get.

A dominant figure in the air and on the ground for the Reds on a weekly basis, he was won 44 aerial battles and performed 31 headed clearances in the Premier League this season – the most in the Liverpool squad.

And a new video posted on Instagram showcasing the 27-year-old’s aerial prowess has amazed Reds fans on social media.

Posted by former Liverpool star Ryan Babel on his Instagram Story, the clip shows the Netherlands squad preparing for their Nations League encounter with with champions France.

Running towards a ball hanging from the ceiling, van Dijk launches himself off the ground to head the ball, leaving watching team-mates and fans you have seen the video in awe at his astonishing leap.

Van Dijk then celebrates with Memphis Depay, before a further Netherlands team-mate jumps to reach the ball, barely brushing it with his fingertips.

With such ability in the air, it is somewhat surprising that the Reds’ third-choice captain is still searching for his first Premier League goal for the club.

Liverpool’s primary target at set-pieces, he could have ended up with a hat-trick away at Arsenal two weeks ago yet his total for Jurgen Klopp’s side remains on just one.

However, a Merseyside Derby clash with Everton awaits next month as the Blues return to Anfield for the first time since van Dijk’s Reds debut back in January.

Marco Silva’s side have conceded a division-high total of six goals from set-pieces so far this season. What are the odds on the Dutchman ending his goalscoring drought on derby day?
