According to reports, the appointment was made by President Uhuru Kenyatta last week although no official communication was released from State House.

The Wiper Leader took up the role of heading the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (JMEC) on peace in South Sudan.

Mr Musyoka had hinted on the appointment on Friday when he declared that he will be Kenyatta’s “errand boy.”

The post that Musyoka took up was formerly held by former Botswana President Festus Mogae, who stepped down in August.

JMEC was established by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development that oversaw the peace process in South Sudan since 2013.

President Salva Kiir signed a peace agreement with rebel leader Riek Machar to end a civil war that killed at least 50,000 people, displaced two million and held up the country’s progress since it gained independence seven years ago.

Similarly to Kalonzo’s appointment, Opposition leader Raila Odinga also landed a job as a special envoy with the African Union.

Reports indicated that Odinga’s appointment as the AU’s special envoy for infrastructure development in the continent was a deal struck six months ago.

The March 9 handshake between Kenyatta and Odinga caught many Kenyans by surprise, considering the bitterly contested General Election and the resultant protests after the mock swearing-in of Raila as ‘the people’s president’ on January 31.

It was not clear what was in the handshake for Raila, who had dedicated his time to discrediting Uhuru’s presidency and the entire Jubilee administration.
