Speaking after her win, Ilhan Omar said that Minnesota state had always made her feel like she was part of a family.

“Here in Minnesota, we don’t only welcome immigrants; we send them to Washington,” she said.

State Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat, defeated Republican Jennifer Zielinski in the race to represent the state’s Fifth District, which spans Minneapolis, Edina, Richfield, Golden Valley and other suburbs.

The 36-year old, a former Dadaab refugee, is a vocal advocate for single-payer health care, tighter gun restrictions and more expansive immigration policies. Ilan immigrated to the United States at age 12 and served as a Minneapolis City Council policy aide before winning election to the Legislature in 2016.

The Michigan Democrat, Rashida Tlaib, will fill the seat formerly occupied by John Conyers, who left office last year amid accusations of sexual misconduct. She ran unopposed on the general election ballot following her primary win.

Tlaib is the daughter of Palestinian immigrants and became the first Muslim female member of Michigan’s state legislature a decade ago. She has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump and was recently arrested in Detroit during a protest for higher pay and the right to form unions.

The two women now elected into congress have broken the glass ceiling and according to Wa’el Alzayat, CEO of Emgage, a nonprofit that supports US Muslim political engagement; they have defied the ideas of what Muslim women should look like, do like, be like and will continue fascinate people.
These powerful women are now etched into the history books for their stories of hope and resilience. Let this be a reminder to all girls out there, that you can be anything you want to be even when the odds are stacked up against you.
