Man arrested after preventing son from sitting KCPE exams in Homa Bay

It seems we are yet to see enough drama in the ongoing KCPE examinations.

We have already witnessed several cases of pupils doing their exams in hospitals after giving birth hours to the exam on Tuesday. In fact one of the girls named her daughter after Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohammed.

In another case, two pupils in Kilifi County decided to get married on Tuesday and therefore forfeit sitting for exams despite working hard for close to eight years. Talk of the pot breaking at the door step.

In Narok County, exam materials mysteriously disappeared while on transit to an exam centre on Wednesday morning. More interestingly is the fact that the exams were under police security.

Now the Ministry of Interior has been accused of militarizing the exams, but if exam materials can disappear while under police protection, then someone has really failed.

But am not here to tell you about all that, there is another worrying case that has been reported.

A 38-year-old man is being held at Homa Bay Police Station after detaining his son and preventing him from sitting the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.

Tom Goya Mboya was on Wednesday arrested at his home in Akele village, Homa-Bay Town Constituency, after blocking his 14-year-old son from going to sit for the examinations at Akele Primary School.

Confirming the incident, Homa Bay County Director of Children’s Department Peter Kutere said the man instructed his son not to leave home as he wanted him to repeat Class Seven and sit the national examinations next year.

The boy, who had prepared and was leaving for school when he was blocked by his father, was therefore forced to miss the Mathematics and English papers scheduled for day one of the examinations on Tuesday.

Mr. Kutere further warned parents and guardians from violating the right of children to education stating that those found culpable will face the full force of the law.
