Details: Why arrested Ayub Savula Spoke too soon

Lugari MP, Ayub Savula might have just spoken too soon. Early this year, the MP proposed that the law be changed to provide for execution of persons involved in mega-corruption.

According to Mr. Savula, strengthening the law is the only way to end the vice of corruption that has crippled the nation saying that the current provisions of the penal code are too lenient for suspects of grand corruption. The Lugari Member of parliament said chapter IV of the Constitution on the bill of rights should be amended to provide for people found culpable of corruption involving Ksh. 1 billion and above to be executed publicly.

“Someone who steals one billion is equivalent to a murderer. How many people would die in hospitals for lack of medicine as a result of the theft?” said Ayub.

The MP added that Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) should be given the powers to prosecute arguing that corruption had reached alarming levels and therefore urged leaders from across the political divide to unite and amend the constitution to strengthen institutions fighting the vice.

“Blaming President Uhuru Kenyatta will not solve the problem because it is the police, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission and the courts that are charged with dealing with corruption. They cannot succeed while working under weak systems,” he said.

The tables have now turned after the very MP who proposed the prosecution of those involved in corruption was caught in the act. Ayub Savula was yesterday arrested and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) headquarters for interrogation after there were allegations that he was conspiring to steal over 122 million from the Ministry of Information Communications and Technology.

The Lugari member of parliament was arrested at an entertainment spot in Nairobi and will be held at the Muthaiga Police Station over the weekend until his arraignment in Court on Monday.
