Orphans affected deeply by Vohra’s death

Details of the Sarova family whereabouts before they were involved in the deadly car crush reveal their noble side as they are reported to have been on a charity mission as well as prayer session related to Sikh tradition.

Makindu Hope Academy usually receives visitors during celebrations at the Sikh temple in Makindu but on the fateful Saturday they were truly caught unawares by the Vohra family who gave them an impromptu visit in the ours of lunch.

The visit saw Vohra family promise to sponsor six children that would perform well in the KCPE exam. Not the first time as residents said he was also sponsoring other students from the area.

Academy director Patricia Kanini, who was not in the school at the time, said she received a call from one teacher enquiring if they expected visitors.“My school is frequently visited by well-wishers as we have orphans. I didn’t see them and can’t tell how many they were,” she said.

They made sure the day was nothing close to ordinary as the four members of the family who are co-owners of Sarova Hotel provided lunch to the pupils and were given snacks, including biscuits and soda.Together they ate boiled rice with ndegu,  Photos of the family serving the children went viral soon after they died

The family was later involved in a road crash on their way back to Nairobi. Their vehicle veered off the road, hit a culvert and landed in a ditch. Mohinder Vohra, his wife, a daughter and a daughter-in-law died. His son Saveer, who was driving, was injured.

Makindu gurdwara’s Chuckjit Jabbssi said the family was at the temple to pray and remember another son, Jaideep, who died last year. Jaideep was a racing enthusiast. He died after his car rolled near Amboseli Lodge. He was en route to the East African Safari Classic Rally in November.

“We read our Holy Book for three days continuously and pray for the departed,” Jabbssi said revealing that the family was at the temple for a three-day Sikh tradition.

He eulogised Vohra as an honest man. Vohra was a former chairman of the temple. Despite relinquishing the post four years ago, he was still involved in its activities. Jabbssi said he “hated lies and helped only sincere people. His passion and love for the Makindu people saw him employ youths in his company,” he said.

Gurdwara manager Amardin Sign said the family had been jovial as they left for Nairobi. He said Vohra was mindful of the well-being of the poor. The bodies are in MP Shah Hospital mortuary. They will be cremated tomorrow.

According to the family, Saveer who was the only survivor  is recovering well and has been discharged from the hospital. It is still unclear whether there are more survivors within the immediate nuclear family, aside from Saveer.

For now, the relatives are focusing on funeral rites for the four. “The final prayers will be held at Sikh Temple Pangani on Thursday October, 25, 2018 from 10.30 am. The cortege will then leave for Hindu Shamshan Bhumi, Kariokor at noon for the cremation,” they stated. The Vohra family is one of the wealthiest families in Kenya. The family co-owns the Sarova group of hotels and resorts along with John Ngata Kariuki, the brother to former chief spy, James Kanyotu and former Member of Parliament of Kirinyaga Central.

After the untimely death of the legendary family clearly there are souls that wont forget them due to the manner in which they impacted their lives.
