Kenya’s second largest stadium, Nyayo Stadium, will not be ready for use anytime soon.
Nyayo alongside Kasarani Stadium was closed in May last year for renovations intended to bring it up to FIFA standards in readiness for the 2018 CHAN. But since the tournament was whisked away by CAF due to unpreparedness, the work that was supposed to be completed in 60 days completely stalled.
Kasarani barely escaped the same predicament after betting firm Sportpesa ensured that the right playing standards are met and the work was duly complete albeit with a few hitches here and there.
However in the latest twist to the story, it has been revealed that renovations are back underway but to many Kenyans surprise the intention is not to have the Stadium ready for gaming purposes but rather for the forthcoming Jamhuri Day celebrations in December.
The news was met with angry remarks from Kenyans who left disappointed with the state of the Stadium.
This is Nyayo Stadium's current state. It's been closed for a year & a half and only now is it being rushed…not for the benefit of our shujaa sportsmen, but to host politicians for Jamhuri Day celebrations. Misplaced priorities.
We saw the same happen with Kinoru Stadium. Smh pic.twitter.com/OCOBxQAWWH— Idah Waringa (@IdahWaringa) October 23, 2018
