Should Raila Odinga really Retire From Local Politics?

Some Members of Parliament have claimed that Opposition leader Raila Odinga should retire from local politics and since his new appointment to the African Union doesn’t allow him to be active in politics.

Speaking Uasin Gishu County on Sunday the lawmakers argued that the former Primer’s new job is demanding hence he should quit local politics.

MPs pushing the agenda were Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro, Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwa, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa and Oscar Sudi of Kapsaret.

“The kind of job Raila has been given in South Africa doesn’t allow him to participate in politics, he should leave politics to us,” Barasa stated.

His sentiments were echoed by his Kiharu counterpart who stated: “Because he has a bigger job in the whole of Africa, he should now leave local politics to us.”

Former Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale added his voice to the issue claiming that Raila’s time in politics was over and he should prepare young people to take the reins.

“An old man is not allowed to dance with young people, Raila played dance with Matiba, Moi and Kibaki, he should quit now because his time is over,” Khalwale stated.

Raila was appointed as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa by Chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat.

In a statement to newsrooms, President Uhuru Kenyatta lauded Odinga’s appointment stating it was a great honour for the Raila but also the Kenyan people.

Reports have emerged claiming that President Kenyatta might have played a key role in the appointment of Opposition leader Raila Odinga African Union special envoy.
