Niko Kovac seems to have tested the patience of the Bayern Munich hierarchy long enough.

After a stellar start that procured seven consecutive victories, the manager has guided the Bavarians into a torrential maelstrom of poor form that hasn’t seen them pick up a single win in the last four games. They find themselves in the unwanted position of being in sixth in the Bundesliga table.

Now – with a press conference announced for today – a surprise name is now in the frame to take over from the beleaguered Kovac.

Arsene Wenger is reportedly that man.

Wenger ended his tenure at the helm of Arsenal at the culmination of the 2017/18 season after an incredible 22 years, becoming the longest-serving manager in the club’s history.

This would be the first time Wenger will have coached in Germany, and despite the resentment shown by a significant proportion of Gunners in his last few seasons as manager, still garners enough respect on the continent and, importantly, at the highest level of the game.

The Frenchman holds the second-highest all-time appearances in the Champions League as coach, behind only the peerless Sir Alex Ferguson.

Bayern are due to hold an out-of-the-blue press conference this Friday, chaired by president Uli Hoeness, chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic. The last time this happened was to announce Jupp Heynckes’ return as manager, following Carlo Ancelotti’s sacking from the club almost exactly a year ago.

Kovac has been in the job for little over three months since arriving from Eintracht Frankfurt.
