Borussia Dortmund centre-back Manuel Akanji admits he dreams about joining Manchester United one day. The Switzerland international joined the Bundesliga giants last January and has played every minute of Dortmund’s league campaign so far this term. The 23-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the club’s most influential players and was even handed the armband by Marco Reus against Nurnberg last week.

Jose Mourinho is desperate to strengthen his defence but Ed Woodward vetoed moves for top targets Toby Alderweireld and Jerome Boateng last summer.

Akanji, though, has revealed he’d be keen on a move after admitting he dreams of playing for the Red Devils. ‘I have a big dream,’ said Akanji ‘To get as far as possible in football. Since my childhood days Manchester United have been my favourite club. I’d like to play there one day ‘But right now, that’s not an issue. I am happy at Dortmund and try to be the best possible person off the pitch.’

Manchester United enter a tricky six-week period after the international break in which they’ll face Juventus, Chelsea, Manchester City and Bournemouth. Should Mourinho survive until January, he’s likely to demand at least one centre-back when the transfer market reopens.
