Here’s DPP Direct Arrest Of Kipchoge Keino (Know Why)

The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji on Saturday issued a statement ordering Kipchoge Keino and former Sports CS Hassan Wario to surrender to the DCI headquarters by Monday before being subjected to arrest.

Kipchoge, Wario and five other persons in the ministry alongside members of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) will be required to respond to questions relating to their involvement in embezzlement of funds meant for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The government had set aside Ksh544 million for the Olympics, part of which investigations have found was embezzled under Wario and NOCK officials’ watch.

The DPP stated that after reviewing files from the investigating officers, he had established that there was sufficient evidence to charge the former Cabinet Secretary and the other officers for the misappropriates of at least Ksh55 Million.

“Accordingly, I have directed the DCI to immediately have the persons arraigned in court. They are hereby directed to report before the DCI headquarters on or before October 15. 2018, failure ton which the process of obtaining warrants of arrest shall commence before a competent court,” the DPP stated.

The other accused persons include ex-PS Richard Ekai, Harun Komen, Stephen Kiptanui, Patrick Kimathi and Francis Kanyili.

Former NOCK official Stephen Soi was arrested in connection to the Rio 2016 Olympics financial scandal on Friday night and is being held at the Muthaiga Police Station.

Close to Ksh16.9 Million of public funds were lost after the officials procured tickets that were never used in the Olympics. The accused persons also spent about Ksh6.6 Million on unauthorized persons, most of whom were relatives of NOCK officials.

The DPP’s office also directed for the recovery of resources spent on the unauthorised persons through the asset recovery agency.

In 2016, Soi admitted that he carried Ksh25 Million cash to Rio to cater for medicine and accommodation for the participants.
