Ugandans troubled by Zari’s appointment as tourism ambassador

Socialite Zari Hassan was last week appointed Uganda’s ambassador for Tourism by Uganda’s Tourism minister Godfrey Kiwanda. However, her appointment in the position has left a reasonable number of people troubled.

Among those is Pastor Martin Ssempa, an activist and the founder of the Makerere Community Church.

Speaking to Kyakala, Ssempa who says got to know Zari in Jinja at a time he was crowned Uganda’s breakdance champion, he has not only been disappointed by her lifestyle but the decision of appointing her Uganda’s tourism ambassador only made it worse.

“Zari’s character doesn’t represent who we are as a country. Her behaviours don’t represent our ethics of a strong family and good manners. Even when we talk about sex, we conceal it as ’emboozi z’abakulu’. May be people (Kiwanda) were troubled by the good looks that hide the reality of the knowledge of who we know Zari to be,” he wonders.

“Perhaps the minister was in a (Zari) ‘White Party’ and all his thinking was affected by the White Party. We know Zari to be a woman who hops from bed to bed. We know her as a woman who shows her body in nudes and a woman whose character doesn’t represent the women of Uganda.”

He argued that by appointing her to that position, Kiwanda is only trying to promote Uganda as a sex country.

“The only reason why a country seeking to market itself nationally and internationally would promote Zari is if we want to turn Uganda into a sex tourism industry. Or, when we stop focusing on who people really are and shift the focus to their make-up.”

Zari Hassan was recently mauled by her countrymen for an inappropriate Independence Day message she shared online as the country marked 56 years of Independence.Zari shared a message to celebrate Uganda’s Independence Day and attached Museveni’s photo instead of the Ugandan flag.

Being Ugandan herself, Zari joined thousands of her people on Tuesday, October 9, in celebrating the day in the best way possible.

However, unlike most of Ugandans who shared their Independence Day messages accompanied by a photo of the Ugandan flag, Zari shared hers but the photo she picked irked many who pounced on her like nobody’s business. The mother of five, who was recently appointed Uganda’s official tourism ambassador posted her message and attached a photo of Ugandan president Museveni.
