Manchester United’s comeback win against Newcastle last weekend saved Mourinho’s job. The under-pressure boss, however, could still be axed if United’s form doesn’t improve.

And according to The Sun, Mourinho and Red Devils executive vice-chairman Woodward are set for talks. They say the pair will meet in London in the next 48 hours in hope of clearing the air.

The Sun add that Mourinho is convinced United have been making plans surrounding his successor behind his back. Mourinho wants Woodward to convince him that isn’t the case.

The Special One is hoping to use the meeting to tempt Woodward to splash the cash in the January transfer window – if he’s still in charge at Old Trafford.Former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane is the favourite to take over at Old Trafford should United sack Mourinho.

Speaking after United’s 3-2 win against Newcastle last weekend, Mourinho said: “The ones that read the papers, that are connected with social media, they thought maybe I had gone.

“If I hadn’t had an SMS from my board not to read I would have been convinced too. I’m amazed by that at half time we were losing 2-0 and the fans were magnificent to the team.

“I used to say in my football memories that one day I beat Liverpool in Anfield 4-0. And I was amazed with the stadium singing Liverpool songs, I was amazed and full of respect by that.

“But now I’m in a situation I’m losing 2-0 at home in a match that was very important for us to win and the fans were absolutely amazing.

“I’m really grateful for that and my happiness is not because of myself, it is because of the fans and the players.

“They can go to the national team with a good feeling and the fans can go home with a feeling of victory.”

In the meantime , Mourinho will attend Serbia’s UEFA Nations League game with Montenegro to reportedly scout two players.

Serbia manager Mladen Krstajic has revealed that Mourinho will watch their game alongside injured Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic.

“Nemanja Matic did not come to Belgrade for the camp because he has a problem with his back,” he said.

“Matic will most likely come to Podgorica to see us because his boss is coming.”

According to reports, Mourinho will be watching to scout two potential United targets.

Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinković-Savić is expected to feature for Krstajic’s side in Thursday’s game, and has long been courted by United.

Mourinho has clearly been watching loads of Football Italia, because his obsession with Serie A means he will also keep a close eye on Fiorentina centre-half Nikola Milenkovic.

The 20-year-old should start at the heart of defence against Montenegro, and would be a cheaper alternative to Mourinho’s two primary January targets.
