Why Migori may end up having Governor,Senator from same village

Migori County is scheduled to have senatorial by-elections Monday October 8 following the demise of the former senator Ben Oluoch who succumbed to Cancer in June 2018.

The seat which has attracted six candidates has seen stiff competition from ODM Party candidate Ochilo Ayacko and Federal Party of Kenya’s Eddy Oketch Gicheru.

On Saturday the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) warned candidates taking part in the Migori senatorial by election to refrain from incitement or sponsoring violence ahead of Monday’s vote.

About 1000 police officers have been deployed to various parts of the county to ensure Monday’s vote remains peaceful.

However, following the campaigns that were concluded on Friday October 5, the county may end up electing a senator who hails from the same area as the Governor.

Eddy Oketch, who hails from same area as Governor Okoth Obado enjoys a mega support from youths.

Youths in the area claim that it is a high time they have to reject old leaders who mostly serve at their interests and not their people’s interests.

ODM leader Raila Odinga camped in the county traversing in its regions to campaign for his candidate Ochilo Ayacko whom the youths claim is old.

They also claim that Odinga has been forcing leaders on them.

This gives Oketch high chances of getting elected as Migori county governor after the late Ben Oluoch.

According to ODM Party’s director of communications, North Kanyamkago Ward is where The Governor of Migori Hon. Okoth Obado and Eddy come from. They share the same Chief.

Oketch finished the second in the past 2017 polls senatorial race in Migori.

If elected, the county will have the governor and senator hail from the same village.
