Detectives believe both Irungu and Maribe, his lover, played a role in Monica’s murder or knew something about it It has emerged parents of Joseph Irungu, the prime suspect in the mysterious and gruesome murder of 28-year-old Monica Kimani, have not been able to come to terms with the grave allegations facing their son. The besieged Irungu, fiance of Citizen TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, was arrested on September 21 after Monica’s lifeless body was discovered dumped in a pool of blood inside her house in Kilimani, Nairobi.

We learnt on Monday, October 1,  neither Irungu’s father, Julius Mwangi Irungu, nor his mother, was willing to talk about their son’s situation. The family, the Standard reported, had also kept a low profile since the arrest of Irungu in connection with murder.

The family’s close friends disclosed they had even stopped going to church like they used to every Sunday. It is alleged Irungu’s mother was the most affected by news about her son’s arrest and attempted suicide and had totally refused to believe the boy she gave birth to could be a killer.

Police had earlier established Irungu also tried to kill himself at his girlfriend’s house in Lang’ata, Nairobi, moments before he was arrested. The gun used in the alleged suicide attempt was found by the detectives in one of the three houses the suspect had reportedly visited. The owner of the gun in question, identified as Brian Kassaine Spira, was also arrested and is now in police custody alongside Irungu and Maribe.

Meanwhile, Irungu’s high profile lover, Maribe, spent two nights in police custody as she awaited arraignment on Monday. Detectives whisked the Citizen TV news anchor to Gigiri Police Station on the night of Saturday, September 29, following several hours of interrogations. The DCI confirmed his team had gathered sufficient evidence to charge the TV beauty whom we understand is now a key suspect in Monica’s murder.
