How Kenyan trio helped Swedish side avoid relegation

Kenya trio of Tereza Engesha, Christine Nafula, and Mary Kinuthia have accomplished their mission of helping Swedish side Dalhem IF survive relegation.

The side needed maximum points from their final match of the season but their survival would depend on the results of the game against  IFK Lidingö FK and IK Tun.

Lindigo suffered a 3-0 loss in the final match while Dalhem pummeled IFK Nyköping 9-0 in a match played at Dalhem IP on Saturday.

Engesha scored four goals in the game while Nafula netted a brace to send the side six goals up at the halftime break. In the final half, Linnea Hjerp, Mary Wanjiku Kinuthia, Johanna Lilja got a goal each in the clash.

The three points from the clash saw Dalhem finish eighth on the Swedish Division ll log after 18 matches. The side scored 44 goals in the season but conceded 52.  They managed six wins, one draw, and 11 losses.

Engesha, Nafula, and Kinuthia were signed in mid-August with their main purpose of being brought on board being to help the side survive relegation. They have been impressive through the season scoring goals that have been key for the side’s survival.

Dalhem Idrottsförening is a sports club in Dalhem on Gotland, about 20 km  from Visby. The club was founded on 11 March 1905 and has been engaged mainly in football, with men’s football starting in 1934 and women’s football in 1973.

Since football operations commenced, Dalhem IF has participated mainly in the lower divisions of the Swedish football league system. The club currently plays in Division 3 Norra Svealand which is the fifth tier of Swedish football. They play their home matches at the Dalhem IP in Dalhem.

Dalhem IF are affiliated to Gotlands Fotbollförbund.  In 2011 the women’s played in Division 2 Östra Svealand.

Kinuthia was born in a small tranquil hometown of Maili Saba in Kitale, Kinuthia started playing football at the tender age of six. She would play with her brothers as if to kill time little did she know that her moment of revelation would come sooner or later.

There was no girls’ team so the magical left-footed forward joined Dream Sportiff later on, which was a boys’ team after being influenced by her brothers.
