Beyond repair? Sarri makes shocking comments about Morata

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata had a poor display in the 1-0 win over Greek side PAOK in the UEFA Europa League and his manager Maurizio Sarri has admitted that there is nothing much he can do to raise the Spaniard’s confidence.

Morata spurned a number of clear-cut chances in the game, especially in the first half. The 25-year-old was given the nod over former Arsenal striker Oliver Giroud who came on as a second-half substitute in the game after starting in the 4-1 win over Cardiff City. Morata has only scored once scored this season which came in the win over Arsenal, despite starting all games bar the Cardiff clash.

Sarri admitted he can do very little to help Morata regain his confidence, “Alvaro has to gain confidence with one, two, three goals. I am not able to give him confidence. In this match he has had three, four opportunities. He was unlucky. I hope for him that in the future I can try to help him, but the confidence can become only with goals. With two goals in two matches. I don’t know.”

Despite not scoring Sarri was impressed with Morata’s energy in the game “I have to say also, for maybe the first time in this season Alvaro was ready in the box. He was on the ball and was active.
