In a boost for Tottenham fans Mauricio Pochettino has said that Toby Alderweireld could still sign a new contract at the club and also insisted he knows Harry Kane better than anyone else amid claims the striker needs a break.
Europe’s biggest clubs were reportedly interested in the Belgian central defender, but despite Manchester United, Bayern Munich and PSG all being linked over the summer no move materialised.
Alderweireld has therefore been reintegrated into the Spurs line up, starting the last 3 games and he recently came out to say he never wanted to leave Spurs.
Pochettino did not mention a new contract and did not want to be drawn out about individual players. However the Argentinain has previously had no problem dropping want away stars, Alderweireld’s return to the team may hint to renewed contract talks, Pochettino did not deny the club were working behind the scenes.
In his press conference the Argentinian said:
”Look, when in England the transfer window closed and in Europe closed I think we move on.”
”Then like always I told you, I never talk about situations, that maybe yes or maybe no, the club is dealing or working. In that situation it’s not my job to talk about individual situations.”
”I think it’s so clear, not only in his case, in all the players that have different situations, we are so clear, the club is so clear, when something happens we are going to communicate the news as soon as possible.”
‘I am not going to talk about individual things. It’s not going to help anyone.”
Although this is by no means any guarantee of the Belgian putting pen to paper on new terms, it can’t be a bad thing for the club.
