VAR will be tested on 15 Premier League games this season, although the technology will not actually be made available to officials and therefore have no impact on the games on which they are being used.

The Premier League are considering implementing VAR from next season and the aim of this trial is to show the results to the league’s investors.

VAR was used successfully at the World Cup in Russia and is currently used in a number of top European leagues such as LaLiga Santander and Serie A, for exampled.

The first games tested will take place on September 15, though there will be no communication between those in the control room and the matchday officials.

In April, Premier League teams voted to hold off on the implementation of VAR until it had been experienced more, and they wanted to see how it worked in Russia first.

The video replays will first be seen after the international break on the 15th September.

VAR will feature during the 3pm games, to see if the officials watching at the VAR hub can keep up with the volume of games in a key test for the technology.

How will VAR be used?
The VAR hub will be based at Stockley Park, near Heathrow.

That means VAR officials will not be at each ground, and there will be no contact with the referee on the field.

That’s so the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) can trial VAR ahead of what they hope is a full introduction next season.

Of course, that means VAR is being trialled, but will not impact games in the Premier League this season.
