Kawere bus found Defective as police arrest Rogue Driver

The bus that was last week filmed being driven recklessly has been declared defective following inspection and will therefore not be allowed back on the road.

The National Transport and Safety Board (NTSA) has said the decision to declare the bus not roadworthy was arrived at after re-inspection exercise that was carried out at the Kakamega motor vehicle inspection centre on 4th September, 2018.

“According to the inspection report, the bus has a defective speed governor and non-functional seatbelts. Consequently, the bus owner has been issued with a prohibition order as per Section 106 of the Traffic Act,” NTSA said on Thursday in a statement.

At the same time, NTSA, has confirmed that the bus driver who was captured on video driving the bus recklessly along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway has been arrested.

According to NTSA, Rengcom communications company presented the driver to them and they subsequently handed him over to the police on Monday.

“Following the summoning of Rengcom Communications Company Ltd regarding the incidence of reckless driving of their bus registration number KCL 414 C, the Authority wishes to clarify that the Company presented the driver and was handed over to the Police on Monday 3rd September, 2018,” NTSA’s statement read in part.

The drivers had his license revoked by the National Transport and Safety Board (NTSA). NTSA has also summoned the officials of Rengcom Company to which the bus – registration number KCL 414C – belongs.

In statement dated August 31, 2018, NTSA identified the rogue bus driver as Hillary Shikouko Panyola whose Driving License Number is JQB159.

“Analysis of the vehicle’s speed record identified instances of speeding beyond the legal limit of 80kph for Public Service Vehicles… The Authority has also revoked the Driver’s Class A endorsement and PSV license,” NTSA said.
