Why Tottenham’s Victory over Man Utd won’t last

Tottenham beat Manchester United 3-0 last night at Old Trafford – their first there for almost five years after losing on their previous four visits.

A Harry Kane header and a Lucas Moura double helped heap the pressure on Jose Mourinho who has had a rocky start to the Premier League campaign.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men have enjoyed a level of consistency over the past few seasons, finishing in the top four. This term, Liverpool are considered the biggest threat to Manchester City’s title chances.

But Pundit Gary Neville believes this is something that will sit uncomfortably with Spurs.

“They [Spurs] might be a little bit annoyed to see other teams linked with the title when they have amassed the most points over the past three seasons other than Man City,” Neville said.

“They might feel that they have a consistency and stability. They’ve not signed players, but they have a group of players who know each other inside out. The big chance for Spurs will always be the Champions League and the other trophies. With the Premier League, there are the continual demands on the squad and can they reproduce it? They haven’t got the depth of the other sides. If they can have a fair wind and the others drop off a little bit over a consistent period, they can beat anybody. If they can start to win the big games away from home, that will be the last piece of the jigsaw to win titles.”

Spurs are now level on points with Liverpool at the top of the table. They travel to face Watford next on Sunday.

Tottenham Boss said: “It is a massive victory for us and I am very proud of the performance,” Pochettino said. “It is difficult to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. They were better in the first half but we dominated from then on, and the clean sheet was a bonus.

“It is only the start of the season and we need to be consistent. We need to be realistic but want to keep pushing and building our fitness. A lot of our players have only had three weeks training but we want to build something special.
