The “socks” condom advert angers Kenyans

Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ezekiel Mutua has come out to address the issue of the ongoing  ‘socks’ condom advert which has been airing on our screens recently where  he claimed, it had  raised a lot of concerns among Kenyans.

​According to the moral policeman as he is popularly known has been on the frontline to condemn sexual content on television, citing that ‘KFCB supports sex education and the campaign for safe sex, but condom adverts, just like all other adverts must be submitted to the Board for examination’.

He, further continued saying  that condom adverts should not be used to give misleading information neither target the wrong audience.

In his statement he said,  “Following complaints and concerns raised by a cross section of Kenyans regarding the “socks” condom advert airing in most Tv stations during prime time, the Board today launched investigations on the matter and has established that the advert was not submitted for examination and classification in line with the requirements of the Films and Stage Plays Act Cap 222.”

Mr. Mutua said that the advert was not submitted for examination at the KFCB and has decided to take legal action against the management. He said that KFCB will issue a statement regarding the matter on Tuesday 28 August.

He further added saying, “The airing of the advert is therefore in contravention of the law and the producers, distributors and broadcasters will be held liable for the breach. The Board has given instructions to its lawyers to proceed and prosecute the concerned institutions for the breach. KFCB will issue a comprehensive statement on the matter tomorrow.”
