Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Andreas Pereira learned their trade at secret training base in the Slovakian mountains

Marcus Rashford and Andreas Pereira both starred for Manchester United in the opening day win against Leicester City on Friday night.

And the star pair, as well as 23 other United academy graduates including Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj, will say a small thanks to a little-known part of Europe: Poprad, Slovakia.

It is at the foot of the High Tatra Mountains where United sent their academy players for an Autumn training camp at the health and wellness centre, AquaCity.

Sitting more than 2,000ft above sea level, AquaCity not only offers relaxing natural springs, an Olympic-size swimming pool and massage centre, it has a water park – while state-of-the-art football facilities were built next door.

It is where the next generation of Slovakian stars are being trained, with the national training centre, the equivalent of England’s St George’s Park, just across the road from AquaCity.

There are also cryo-chambers to aid recovery.

Rashford played at AquaCity in 2013 and 2014, while Pereira was in Slovakia in 2012.

Another is Jesse Lingard, who played at AquaCity in 2010, has become one of Jose Mourinho, and England boss Gareth Southgate’s, most important players in the last 18 months.

As well as Lingard, Rashford and Pereira playing matches in the city, Adnan Januzaj and Scott McTominay are among the 25 players who have made first-team appearances for Manchester United having previously been at AquaCity.

A wall of fame, with plaques of the players who have stayed there, appears with pride of place on a wall inside the resort.

United legend Ryan Giggs, who became a youth coach at Carrington after his illustrious career ended, told local blogger EnglishmaninSlovakia: “It’s vital in a young players development that they get to gain as many different types of football experience as possible.

“Because of the training in Poprad they can relate to playing against different opposition, experience new cultures and food, travelling and adapting to new surroundings.

“The training camp in Poprad allows all this to happen.”

AquaCity boasts nine thermal pools, three outdoor pools, a 50m indoor pool and a fully-equipped gym.

There are also eight saunas, a massage centre and therapeutic whirlpools.

It was the Slovakian National Training Centre next door that was another attraction – with the grass pitch one of the most unique in the world.

While there are all-weather, artificial pitches on the site, the main grass pitch doesn’t have an undersoil-heating system.

Because it is heated by a geothermal lake that lies 2,000m under the Earth’s surface.

While in charge for his brief spell, David Moyes added: “This the ideal place for a sports training camp, the swimming pools and the leisure facilities are enormously popular with our young players.”

Former United academy boss Paul McGuinness appears to be the driving force behind the trips, McGuinness left his role at the club to become the man in charge of England’s future.

He’s now based at St George’s Park as The Football Association’s National Coach Developer – the man coaching the coaches.

Since Ricky Sbragia replaced McGuinness, the ex-Sunderland man has moved United’s academy stars away from Slovakia to Austria.

Jose Mourinho’s next set of youth players will be learning a little bit of their trade at the Obertraun Sports Centre.

Having had a successful trip to Austria last year, Sbragia has already announced he intends to take the youngsters back again this October.

Despite the club moving away from Slovakia, there can be no doubt AquaCity played a small part in developing the next generation of Manchester United talent.
