Reaveled! Why Luos are not Defending Kidero

Evans Kidero arrest

We all know that Former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero was arrested by anti-corruption detectives on Wednesday and is set to be charged in court for abuse of office, money laundering, bribery, conflict of interest and failure to protect public property.

What we don’t understand is why the Luo community has not come out to defend him. Kenyans is synonymous for the Mtu Wetu Syndrome, where leaders still public funds and then running back to their community to claim the community is being targeted.

But so far, no one has come to defend Kidero, in fact I can say the community is one of his biggest critics. So what does this say about the Luos? Are they not loyal or they are just too sophiscated.

Someone by the name Kenyan Parrot on twitter has said the community is God’s special creature because they celebrated the arrest of the former Mumias Sugar C.E.O.

Dr Kidero arrived at Integrity Centre at around 5.20pm Wednesday in a green Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle accompanied by detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The former governor told journalists that he was not aware why he had been arrested.

But EACC CEO Halakhe Waqo said in a statement that the commission has been conducting investigations into allegations of abuse of office, money laundering, bribery, conflict of interest and failure to protect public property by senior government officials including Dr Kidero.

Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji, who consented to the arrest and charging of Dr Kidero and other suspects, said in a tweet that there is sufficient evidence to charge them with several offences of corruption and economic crimes.

A source at Integrity Centre (the EACC headquarters) said the suspects would be interrogated before being charged.

Kenyans have celebrated the arrest, saying the government should continue with efforts to arrest all corrupt leaders and stop the mismanagement of public funds.

Others who will be charged alongside Dr Kidero are Lilian Wanjiru, Jimmy Mutuku, Gregory Mwakanongo, Stephen Ogago, Luke Mugo, Maurice Ochieng, John Githua, Grace Njeri, Lodwar Wholesalers Ltd and Ngurumani Traders Ltd.
