South End Mall on Langata Road is the latest casualty to face the the national environment NEMA in a an ongoing campaign to reclaim grabbed wetlands in Nairobi.
A bulldozer, on Wednesday morning made its way on Lng’ata road on a mission to demolish Southend Mall on instructions of National Environment Management Authority (Nema) officials and the guard of police.
The imposing building, owned by former Bobasi MP Stephen Manoti, has been blamed for obstructing the river leading to perennial flooding and destruction of property in Nairobi West, South C and Lang’ata.
However Kenyans on Twitter were not left behind as they commented on the ongoing demolitions this is what they had to say.
Just because @WilliamsRuto has money and can bribe any other person in government doesn’t mean that his Taj Mall in Embakasi can’t go down, if Southend Mall is going down what’s the big mine that’s been kept at Taj Mall, Wakenya Tuwache ufisadi. NKT! RT

But why did @NemaKenya allow construction of the mall in the first place. Now they are coming full throttle to demolish it, Impunity at play. “Southend Mall”

I remember when Southend mall was complained about then they increased the pace and finished it even faster complete with a name ?????

After Southend Mall, the bulldozers should proceed to Weston Hotel and demolish the hell out of that building. The owner, also known as Mr. Corruption, teargased young children who were protesting the attempted land grabbing.

Is it possible, probable that order can be felt through an entire nation on the seriousness and strength of one institution???
Thus far, kudos #NEMA on Southend Mall demolition.— Kenneth Njuguna (@kenkajei) August 8, 2018
In the interest of Environmental Conservation, “Southend Mall” and all other irregularly built structures should be demolished.

Dear @UKenyatta, please crack the whip on the NEMA officials who took kickbacks from these tycoons who think they can invade our ecosystem and walk away. @NemaKenya, tomorrow please bring down Taj Mall so as to complete the equation

The fact that “Southend Mall” is being demolished but Taj mall is still standing gives the impression that the owner might have crossed the path of a governmnet official and is now being taught a lesson of “knowing people”

As Southend Mall is being demolished over NEMA orders, let them also remember that Taj Mall and standard group offices have been built on Road reserves and needs to come Down.

The 3 ladies on the @CocaCola billboard opposite Southend Mall look like they are laughing at the on going demolition. pic.twitter.com/A8L6z2fUSJ

City Council, NEMA and WALMA officials who approved the building should by now be in jail….. there lies the problem….”Southend Mall” “Taj Mall”

As NEMA demolishes business entities constructed on river beds, they should also avert disasters by doing the same to the several condemned residential buildings dotting the city. Southend Mall.

Southend Mall, next (probably) Taj Mall. though NEMA are doing their jobs, it just goes to show how the cost of undoing corruption is very high.

As Southend Mall is being demolished there are “innocent” business owners who will cry foul but they’re part of the problem. You should never rent or spend money on a building built on a wetland, ontop of a river, that’s supporting impunity.Avoid legitimising thieves. Be Ethical pic.twitter.com/iLTdTKuyNV
