Borussia Dortmund unveil new captain for next season

Marco Reus has been officially named as Borussia Dortmund’s new captain for the 2018/19 season after he led his team out against Stade Rennes in a friendly on Friday.

Having captained his boyhood club several times already, including five times during the second half of the 2017/18 season, Reus has been told he is the club’s new captain for the coming campaign.

“The coach told me today that I will be the new captain,” Reus said after Dortmund’s 1-1 pre-season draw with Rennes. “That is a huge honor and makes me very proud.”

Marcel Schmelzer was the club’s captain last season under Peter Bosz and Peter Stöger, but confirmed in May that he would step down from his role for the upcoming season.

“He is a role model,” Favre told reporters. “He has a lot of experience and has been at the club a long time. It is the logical choice.”

Reus will lead his Dortmund teammates out as the club’s official captain for the first time in the Bundesliga against RB Leipzig on 26 August at the Signal Iduna Park.

The Germany international has made over 200 appearances for his hometown club, scoring 96 goals.

Reus spent his youth career at Borussia Dortmund, prior to leaving for Rot Weiss Ahlen. He has played for three clubs in his senior career, most notably—and with the most influence—in Borussia Dortmund of the Bundesliga.Reus plays primarily as a left attacker for BVB; however, he is capable of playing on the right also and through the middle, due to his ability to closely control the ball with both feet. 2012 was his most successful season when, scoring 18 and assistingeight, he helped Borussia Mönchengladbach secure a place in the following season’s UEFA Champions League.

Reus agreed a move to his home club Borussia Dortmund at the end of that season and is under contract at BVB until 2023.Reus wears the number 11 shirt for Dortmund.

With Dortmund, Reus won the 2013 DFL-Supercup and the German Cup in 2017. Reus was the Footballer of the Year in Germany in 2012 and was on the UEFA Team of the Year in 2013. In 2012, Franz Beckenbauer spoke about Reus, along with Mario Götze, saying, “…As a classic duo there is nobody better than the prolific Reus and Götze.” In 2013, Reus was ranked as the fourth best footballer in Europe by Bloomberg.

During qualification for Euro 2016, Reus made four appearances, scoring once in a 2–0 defeat of Georgia in Tbilisi but was not selected for the tournament after suffering a groin injury.

On 2 June 2018, Reus made his return to international duty after two years in a friendly match against Austria, which ended in a 2–1 loss for Germany. Reus was included in Joachim Löw’s 23-man final squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on 4 June 2018. On 17 June, Reus made his first World Cup appearance during their opening match against Mexico as a substitute by replacing Sami Khedira in the 60th minute, but the match ended in a 1–0 loss for Germany.

 

On 23 June, Reus scored an equalizing goal and his first World Cup goal in the second half as Germany defeated Sweden with 2–1 victory in their second group stage match to resurrect their World Cup hopes.He also provided an assist to Toni Kroos’s late winning goal in that match and was named Man of the Match. However, his side were knocked out from the tournament after losing 2–0 to South Korea in their last group stage match on 27 June.
