Harambee Starlets back home after poor show in CECAFA

The Kenya National women team, Harambee Starlets, has on Saturday, July 28, 2018, jetted back into the country from Rwanda where the team took part in the 2018 CECAFA Women Championships.

Kenya won one match, drew one and lost two, finishing fourth behind Ethiopia, Uganda and Tanzania, who defended the title having won the 2016 edition in Uganda.

“We are disappointed that we did not get the results we expected despite giving a good account of ourselves,” said Starlets coach David Ouma.

“Going forward, we will do a review of the tourney and build up on the experience,” he added.

Focus now shifts to the ongoing Women Premier League, whose second leg is taking shape.

Harambee Starlets edged out Rwanda 2-0 in their final match of the 2018 CECAFA Women Championships played on Friday, July 27, 2018, at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo.

Mercy Achieng and Terry Engesha were on target for the Starlets, who consequently finish fourth in the five-nation tournament with four points from four matches.

In the second last match, Starlets failed to pick up maximum points when they went down 1-0 to Ethiopia in their third match of the CECAFA Women Championships played on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, at the Stade Regional Nyamirambo in Kigali, Rwanda.

Meselu Abera scored Lucy’s lone goal of the match in the 30thminute off a direct freekick that Starlets goalkeeper Poline Atieno failed to keep out.

Tanzania was the first on the scoresheet courtesy of a curling shot from the left flank by Daniel Donisia in the 13th minute. The lead only lasted seven minutes, however, with Mwanahalima Adam’s notching an equalizer straight from a corner kick. Starlets efforts to snatch a winning goal failed to bear fruits, with the defending champions holding tight to see both sides come out with a share of the spoils.

Kenya had earlier on Thursday, July 19, 2018, lost 1-0 to Uganda in the opening match of the tournament. Up next for the Starlets is a match against Ethiopia on Wednesday, July 25, 2018, before wrapping up the five-nation tourney against hosts Rwanda on Friday, July 27, 2018.
