Gor Mahia claimed the bragging rights of the 83rd Mashemeji Derby after a 2-1 win over rivals AFC Leopards in a Kenyan Premier League clash staged at the MISC Kasarani on Sunday 22 July.

Gor were the first to threaten through Francis Kahata who outpaced the tracking Ezekiel Odera; the midfielder’s cross forcing defender Isaac Oduro into a collison with his goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade but the defender was soon back into the field of play.

The opening exchanges in the first five minutes also saw Gor captian Harun Shakava booked for bringing down Jeffery Odeny who was on his bike after a quick break by Leopards.

The game was proving to be a balanced affair as thr minutes ran down with Odeny and Marvin Nabwire being costant threats to the Gor Mahia wing backs. Despite the attacks from Leopards, Gor almost took the lead through Shakava who agonizingly watched his header from a Kahata corner miss the target by a whisker.

The opener would come in the 22nd minute in unthinkable fashion. Keeper Ezekiel Owade had started play with his defender Michael Kibwage, the youngster then threaded the ball to captian Abdalla Salim, whose tame back pass to his goalkeeper was intercepted by Tuyisenge who made no mistake by slotting in his 11th goal of the season.

The goal unsettled the Leopards defence b Ephrem Guikan being guilty of a missed opportunity just two minutes after the Tuyisenge goal; the Ivorian taking too long to pull the trigger after a nice cut back form Tuyisenge. Unmarked Tuyisenge was to tower above the Leopards defence again minutes later but would only watch his header go off target.

Leopards had a perfect opportunity to restore parity two minutes to the break after Joash Onyango had handled the ball just outside with thr referee giving a free pick; up stepped Isaac Oduro whose free kick was to be parried by Oluoch in the Gor Mahia goal with the keeper recovering to hold the ball with leopards players looking to capitalise on the loose ball. But Leopards resorted parity a minute to the break.

In a quick break, Nabwire floated in an inviting ball that found an unmarked Whyvonne Isuza who pulled a scissor kick that sailed to the bottom right corner of Boniface Oluoch’s goal; the pulsating half ending with no team getting the better of the other.

Leopards were to bring striker Alex Orotomal for midfielder Marvin Nabwire after the interval; his first major contribution being handing his side a free kick at the edge of the box which was gathered by Oluoch after a Oduro delivery.

Orotomal presence had given Leopards thr edge they needed for the secomf half with the Rodolfo Zapata coached side causing the Gor Mahia defence all the problems but it was Gor  who restored their lead. A low corner kick by Kahata in the 52nd minute was snapped by Tuyisenge, the Rwandese playing the ball back to Kahata whose cross was volleyed in by George Odhiambo for Gor Mahia’s second.

Goalscorer Tuyisenge had a head Collison with Shittu on the 65th minute and with the Gor Mahia bench ready to bring on Francis Mustafa on his place, the Rwandese miraculously came back to the field of play to continue with the show.

Tempers flared as the match went on with Humphrey Mieno and Ezekiel Odera both being booked in quick succession; the later on bad mouthing the referee. Kahata was to sting Owade’s palms with a ferocious shot as as Gor Mahia looked to kill the game.

Leopards did a quick double change with Eugene Mukangula and Vincent Oburu coming on for Edward Seda and Jeffery Odeny with Kerr throwing in Francis Mustafa for Tuyisenge with Ephrem Guikan rested for Samuel Onyango.

Gor Mahia were happy to hold on with the team holding the ball week to buy time. Captain Abdalla Shittu was lucky not to be sent off after elbowing Mustafa in an off the ball incidents. Coach Dyllan Kerr was yo throw in Cercidy Oketo for Francis Kahata in the dying minutes of the game as Gor held to preserve their unbeaten record and the bragging rights over their nemesis.
