Two Manchester United Stars Feature in the Top 10 Fastest Players at the World Cup

The World Cup reached its conclusion on Sunday but for those not wanting to detox just yet there are still plenty of talking points. Using the official tracking data posted by FIFA after each match, we have gone through all 64 games to find out which players clocked the fastest speeds in Russia.

World Cup winner and now-famous high-flyer Kylian Mbappe was recorded at 32.4 km/h during his scintillating display against Argentina. However, that was not enough to make this list.

With that being said, who were the 10 fastest players at the 2018 World Cup?

10. Hirving Lozano

Top speed: 33.30 km/h
Opponent: Brazil

Some breathtaking performances from Lozano during the World Cup, though unfortunately his high velocity in the Round of 16 against Brazil failed to put a dent in the Selecao’s net.

9. Aleksandr Golovin

Top speed: 33.30 km/h
Opponent: Spain

Golovin enjoyed an exceptional World Cup campaign, with one game of note standing out in particular: Spain. The hosts needed a quick outlet during their win over La Roja as they were continuously compressed further back into their own half, and Golovin certainly provided the required, able-bodied, legs to relieve pressure.

8. Dani Carvajal

Top speed: 33.30 km/h
Opponent: Russia

Same match, different result. Carvajal was thrust on by a desperate Fernando Hierro during the second half to devastate the wilting legs of the Russian defence, and while his pace was lightning-quick, the Real Madrid full-back failed to truly impact proceedings as the hosts held firm.

7. Jesse Lingard

Top speed: 33.52 km/h
Opponent: Colombia

Lingard drew widespread praise this summer for the more technical attributes of his game, but against Colombia his brilliant bursts of pace kept the South Americans on their toes, because lets face it, nothing else would.

6. Kyle Walker

Top speed: 33.52 km/h
Opponent: Colombia

No surprises here, and again, against Colombia the England players had to step their game up a considerable gear as Jose Pekerman’s side exerted some intense pressure.

5. Santiago Arias

Top speed: 33.59 km/h
Opponent: England

This was not a match for the faint-hearted as both sides fought tooth and nail to progress through to the quarter-finals; Arias provided some real zest and zeal down the right flank, and in truth, he did all tournament.

=3. Luis Advincula

Top speed: 33.77 km/h
Opponent: Denmark

Advincula’s fast-paced ventures down the right truly embodied the Peruvian spirit as the nation threw the kitchen sink at the Danes after missing a penalty and going a goal down, unfortunately, it was to no avail for the South Americans.

=3. Marcus Rashford

Top speed: 33.77 km/h
Opponent: Sweden

Wow, England pack some serious pace in their armoury. Another Manchester United player on the list, and his five-minute cameo against a shattered Sweden defence saw him reach a staggering speed of 33.77 km/h – there is of course the argument then that he could have been used more prominently by Southgate.

=1. Ante Rebic

Top speed: 33.98 km/h
Opponent: Denmark

A World Cup finalist, Rebic was sensational for Croatia this summer, with his most notable moment coming against Argentina after firing a sumptuous volley over Willy Caballero. His insatiable work ethic would see him feature twice in the top 10 fasted players as he boasts another quick time of 33.30 km/h against Nigeria.

=1. Cristiano Ronaldo

Top speed: 33.98 km/h
Opponent: Spain

At 33, it seems ludicrous that Ronaldo still possesses that much pace in his engine, but this is why Juventus have splashed the cash for the Portuguese talisman. Staying in peak physical condition is part of Ronaldo’s creed, and it is certainly paying dividends, as he continues to shatter records at a time when he should be winding down.
