Yanga reveal major undoing against Gor Mahia

YANGA FC assistant coach Juma Musah has admitted that the side loss concentration in their tie against Gor Mahia FC but still believes that the side can overturn the results and reach the next round.

The side got whipped 4-0 in a CAF Confederations Cup clash played on Wednesday at Moi Internationatinal Sports centree Karasani. The tactician still believes that the side can get a good result in the remaining three games.

“This is football and anything can happen. We have three matches; two at home and one away and we will do our best to get a win and put our campaign back on track. We lost because of lack of concentration. The first two goals we were just ball watching,”

Gor broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Tuyisenge broke the offside trap to race into a Mieno pass before calmly slotting past the keeper. Before the goal, Yanga had made a goal-line clearance off a Charles Momanyi header in the 12th minute.

Yanga were limited in their chances and Gor keeper Shabaan Odhoji was hugely untested. The closest the visitors came to a goal was four minutes to the break when an Ibrahim Ajibu freekick went inches over the bar.

At the stroke of half time, Gor made it 2-0 with Guikan coming to the end of another beautiful pass from Mieno striking the ball low past the keeper.

The homers should have gone three up in the 63rd minute but Samuel Onyango’s effort from the far post from another of Mieno’s passes was well saved by the keeper.

The Kenyans building pressure bore fruit in the 65th minute when Mwinyi Hajj headed into his own net as he tried to clear away a cross from Kahata destined for Momanyi inside the box after a short start to a corner.

Guikan then put the game to bed in emphatic fashion slamming the ball home from the edge of the box after a counter attack with three minutes of play left. At the stroke of full time, substitute Francis Mustafa had a brilliant shot from range saved by the keeper.

Yanga’s establishment in 1935, its members squabbled over their team’s poor performance and results. The club had an even poorer and unsatisfactory performance in 1936 that caused some of the members to split and form another team. The proponents of breaking away were Arabs who saw fit to cause conflict among the club members that led to a split. They succeeded and together with dissidents, formed a club known as Queens F.C. The name was later changed to Sunderland and then to Simba S.C. which is the club’s current name.

The two teams, Young Africans S.C. (Yanga) and Simba S.C. have been rivals ever since. The teams make up one of the most entertaining, eye-catching and talked about derbies in Africa. Young Africans has won more derby matches than Simba.

The team’s colours are yellow, green and black. Yanga has won more Tanzanian Premier League titles (27 titles) than any other Tanzanian football club.

Young Africans S.C. is the most successful Tanzanian football club in terms of trophies, with 27 premier league titles as of 2017. The club has also secured several other international trophies as CECAFA cup.

In February 1974 Young Africans played a friendly match in Espírito Santo, Brazil country football, the stadium Engineer Alencar Araripe against Sports Railway losing 3–0.

Shabani Nonda is the most notable player to play for the club. He had a stint with Yanga in the middle of the 1990s before heading to Vaal Professionals based in South Africa. Other prominent players who have played for Yanga are Elias Michael (goalkeeper), Maulid Dilunga, Sunday Manara “Computer” and Kassim Manara.
